The Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM) and the Gross Motor Classification System (GMFCS) are well recognised standardised tools used to evaluate change over time for children with Cerebral Palsy. Physiotherapists at Percy Hedley have been using the tool for over ten years and would like to share with others their knowledge and experience.
Who is the course for? The course is suitable for paediatric physiotherapists, occupational therapists and clinicians who work with children with cerebral palsy and who will be able to use the measure as an assessment tool.
Aims and Objectives - Through practical activities, discussion and the use of DVD evidence, the course aims to:
- To introduce participants to the GMFM and to the administration and scoring of the test through practical activities.
- To introduce the GMFCS and how it can be used.
- To give participants confidence to use the GMFCS and GMFM at the end of the course.
- To introduce the way in which the data can be used to measure outcomes for children as individuals and in groups.

The school employs a large multi-professional team, consisting of teachers, psychologist, conductors, SSAs, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and physiotherapists who, together with parents, provide an integrated approach to addressing the special educational needs of the pupils. The Percy Hedley Training Programme is a series of high quality courses which are delivered in the region by a combination of Percy Hedley staff and specialist outside speakers. Our aim is to support inclusion within mainstream schools through the dissemination of effective teaching and therapy strategies which can be successfully applied in the classroom.
